Three-Lap Test

Myriam Fox has written to share news of a testing opportunity:

Hi all,

We will be running a 3 lap test for the T22 or associates on Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th of November at 8am.

We are giving you the opportunity to collect data and see where you stand compared to your previous tests (if any), to set a baseline for
improvement in a standardised on water test and to benchmark you against others.

We will video the test and this will also generate useful feedback for your technical development.

I encourage you to take part in the test and please let me know by replying to this email as soon as possible if you can attend and, in any case, by the 7th of November.

Many thanks

Myriam

I (Keith Lyons) am sorry that it has been so long since I posted anything to this page. I received this note from Steve on 30 October and should have posted it then.

Hi all

If any paddlers are interested, we would like to put on a session on Sunday 9 November after Southern Zone/State Selection.

We will try to get a Sunday morning session if enough people are interested.

Please let me know either way, so we can make a decision.

Regards

Steve

26 August 2008

Some photographs from the weekend taken by Chris are on display at this Flickr page.

Results from the two days of racing are on the Penrith Valley Canoe Club page here.

At the Sunday race most Schmeling paddlers were asked to estimate their clean run time in advance of their first run. There were some interesting estimates.

Phil Gibbons was unable to paddle on Sunday but gave his estimate of the winning K1M time. His estimate was 97.81 and the best time of the day was 96.97. Phil's estimate was 0.87% off. The second fastest run of the day was 97.89 which meant Phil was out by 8/100ths of a second one hour before the run took place. In effect Phil estimated the actual time exactly given the margin of error on two beams.

Two others who were very accurate in their estimates were:
Kane Griffiths was within 0.26% of his actual best run.
Phil Mingerulli was within 2.9% of his estimate.

Weekend Training

23/24 August 2008

Steve has organised a weekend of paddling to coincide with a PVCC race weekend at Penrith. He has sent out a number of emails to the group.

20 August: Colin Borrows has circulated this schedule

Saturday
Course setting 7.45am
Start list published 8.00am
Paddlers and officials briefing 8.10am (after course has been set)

9.30 to 10.25 combination of a short slalom course from top drop to Main Wave and coaching/instruction on the bottom section.

Sunday
Course setting 7.45am – Normal slalom course 18 to 25 gates
Water on 8.30am
8.30 to 9.20 Coaching and instruction on course
9.20 to 10.25 Full race (as Normal) on practised course. 2 Runs or 3 if time permits.

This is Steve's email (20 August) about the weekend:

To all Schmelings

Apologies that this will go to all regardless of whether you can be with us this weekend. This weekend is going ahead in a modified format - Colin will give more details along the following lines:-

Saturday and Sunday will have water from 8.30-10.30

Saturday will begin at 8.30 with a Giant Slalom to get you warmed up for the day! This will be followed by a short-course slalom at 9.30.

After a chance to talk about your program, we will gather again in the afternoon for a training session. Any whitewater will have to be among rafts.

Sunday race is from 8.30 -10.30 but will allow all to train on the race course until 9.30. The full slalom will be from 9.30. Water will remain on for rec paddling until about 12.00 I believe.

With small numbers the weekend provides an ideal opportunity for some good training and appropriate racing. We have a limited number of coaches at this stage because of another sporting event happening in China, but I'll see which arms I can twist.

Regards

Steve Etheridge

Launch

14 June 2008

Steve Etheridge suggested at the launch on 14 June that the paddlers in the group had a patron saint in Max Schmeling. Steve outlined Max Schmeling's career and the characteristics that resonated with the aims of this coaching group.
